Is This Trip Right for You?

This active program covers a fair amount of ground each day. Expect from two to three hours walking at a fast pace, every touring day. You will encounter some uneven (cobblestone) or wet surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. The excursion to Bulls Island combines bus, ferry and walking. You will be required to walk up to 5 miles. This tour is not recommended for people who have difficulty walking. The route and program may vary according to weather conditions, seasonal changes and safety issues.

Itinerary

DAY 1, Friday - Arrive in Jacksonville
Arrive in Jacksonville, perfectly positioned along the northeastern coast of Florida, where the St. Johns River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Transfer to your hotel. Tonight, a briefing by your Tour Manager on the wonderful journey that awaits you followed by a Welcome Drink with your fellow travelers. Your tour will begin with an orientation meeting with your Tour Manager at approximately 7PM on the day of arrival. We recommend that you select flights which arrive in your destination no later than 5PM on Day 1 of the itinerary or earlier, if possible
Overnight: Jacksonville

DAY 2, Saturday – Guided Trolley Tour of St. Augustine
This morning, depart Jacksonville for St. Augustine, the oldest city in the United States. Today's guided trolley tour of St. Augustine winds through the many contrasting sections of this lovely city. Enjoy the rest of your day at leisure using your included trolley pass to see some of the major sights. Perhaps, visit the world-famous spring that Ponce de Leon deemed the Fountain of Youth. Experience early St. Augustine as you tour old St. Augustine Village, featuring houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Other stops could include the Old Jail, History Museum, Potter's Wax Museum, San Sebastian Winery and Flagler College. Relax in the afternoon at an outdoor café or along the coast. Return to Jacksonville for a Welcome Dinner with your fellow travelers

DAY 3, Sunday - Jekyll Island*, Continue to Savannah
Travel north along the unspoiled Georgia coast of vast marshlands, winding rivers and beautiful beaches to Jekyll Island, majestically situated in the midst of Georgia's fabled "Golden Isles". Along with its beaches and pleasant climate, the island is famous for its Jekyll Island Club, where some of America's elite families and socialites vacationed, such as the Morgans, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts. Enjoy a narrated tram tour* of Jekyll Island's Historic District and hear more about the fascinating stories of the island's beginnings and development by the "rich and famous" of the late 1800s. Continue to Savannah for a evening at leisure

DAY 4, Monday - Guided Trolley Tour of Savannah
A full day to enjoy the beauty of Savannah, often called the "Belle of the South". Experience the city's storied past on the guided trolley tour that takes you through the Historic District, the largest in the country, featuring a myriad of architecturally significant buildings. Highlights include such landmarks as Forsyth Park, River Street, the Waving Girl statue, the Cotton Exchange and Colonial Park. Walk along the cobblestone streets and see the lovely manicured gardens and oak-shaded parks draped with Spanish Moss

DAY 5, Tuesday - Beaufort Carriage Ride, Continue to Charleston
Today bid farewell to Savannah as you continue to the unique town of Beaufort - its entire downtown was designated a historic district by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Enjoy lunch on your own, and a guided tour of the city by horse-drawn carriage. Pass the beautifully restored historic mansions built by the wealthy plantation owners before the Civil War. Beaufort was one of the Southern towns chosen to be occupied by Union troops, rather than destroyed. See art galleries, antique shops, and boutiques that dot the entire downtown, along with elegant restaurants and quick eateries. Depart for Charleston, a city brimming with historic charm, known for its warm Southern hospitality. Arrive at your hotel for an evening at leisure. Later this evening, participate in the optional Charleston Ghost & Graveyard Walking Tour to learn the history, intrigue and stories from Charleston’s past

DAY 6, Wednesday - City Tour of Charleston
Today's discovery of Charleston begins with a city tour taking place along the quaint centuries-old cobblestone streets, past stately multi-colored homes and magnificent restorations, representing a range of architectural styles from the Revolutionary War period to Antebellum mansions. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore the city on your own. Don’t miss the optional tour to one of the oldest working plantations in the South, Boone Hall, where you’ll hear about the day-to-day life of those who ran the plantation as well as their fascinating history. At this evening’s Farewell Dinner, share wonderful memories with your newfound friends

DAY 7, Thursday - Full Day Excursion to Bulls Island
This morning, depart Charleston heading north for Bulls Bay. Board a ferry for one of the most sustainable ecosystems in the world, a salt marsh estuary, on your way to the remote north beach of Bulls Island. On board, a naturalist guide will describe the history and ecology of the area while keeping look for some of the indigenous wildlife of the region. Upon arrival to Bulls Island, enjoy a scenic walk on iconic Boneyard Beach known for its dramatic beauty and incredible shelling. Enjoy a picnic lunch before taking a slow ferry ride around and back to the mainland. Return to your hotel for a evening at leisure on your last night in Charleston

DAY 8, Friday - Return Home

Optional Tours

Walk inside the gates of one of Charleston’s oldest graveyards after dark. Explore the dark corners, and learn about the history of Charleston and stories of the famous individuals who found their final resting place in the ‘Holy City’. Graveyards are endearing pockets of Charleston - so much so that they are often referred to here as simply “gardens.” Listen to the history, intrigue and tales of love and loss with a local guide for this evening excursion.

Charleston Ghost & Graveyard Walking Tour Thumbnail

Tour one of the oldest working plantations in the South, Boone Hall, where you’ll hear about the day-to-day life of those who ran the plantation as well as their fascinating history. See the many various plants, flowers, and trees that are currently growing in the beautiful gardens including the antique roses that are over 100 years old. See the Georgian-designed home the blends recovered materials and antique furnishings to recreate an atmosphere that would have surrounded a Coastal Carolina planter's family and his guests. Learn about the history of Boone Hall Plantation and its evolution through several owners since the 17th century.
