Is This Trip Right for You?

This active program covers a fair amount of ground each day. Expect from three to four hours walking every touring day. There is an early wake-up for the flight to Guatemala City. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, cobblestone streets, stairs, steps and significant slope. Due to the varied elevations, travel in Guatemala may cause some passengers to experience the temporary effects of altitude sickness. DAY 1, Friday - Depart for Guatemala
Depart for Guatemala. Upon arrival in Guatemala City, transfer to your hotel. Balance of the day is at leisure

DAY 2, Saturday - Guatemala City Tour, Lake Atitlan
This morning, depart for a panoramic tour of Guatemala City and discover the unique blend of old and new in Central America's largest metropolis. Begin with the city's civic center complex, home to the Guatemala Supreme Court, Ministry of Public Finance, and City Hall. Continue on to Central Plaza, also known as Constitution Plaza, at the heart of Guatemala City. Here, view the National Palace, one of the most important Guatemalan architectural achievements of the last century. Formerly the seat of government, it is now a museum and venue for government affairs. From here, you will continue on to the Cathedral, built between 1782 and 1815. The cathedral houses some of the most important artistic treasures in the country. Afterward, head to Lake Atitlan, one of the most beautiful in the world, with its crystalline-azure waters. Atitlán is the ideal place to come in contact with Guatemalan folklore. Twelve Indian villages surround the lake which are inhabited by descendants from the great Quiché, Cakchiquel, and Tzutujil nations. This evening attend an orientation meeting with your Tour Manager and fellow travelers, followed by a Welcome Dinner

DAY 3, Sunday - Market in Chichicastenago, Church of Santo Tomas
Today, depart for Chichicastenango to visit the most picturesque and colorful Indian Market in the country. Hundreds of vendors from the surrounding countryside gather here to sell handicrafts, textiles, candles, food, flowers, and pottery. Spend time browsing the market for unique items that cannot be found elsewhere. Next, head to the 400-hundred year old Church of Santo Tomas, built on a pre-Columbian temple platform, and witness the captivating religious ceremonies that take place right on the steps. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before spending the afternoon at leisure. This evening, dine together at the hotel

DAY 4, Monday - Lake Atitlan, Tour of Santiago
This morning, you will board the motor launch to cross Lake Atitlán to the picturesque Indian village of Santiago Atitlán, one of the twelve lake-shore villages surrounding the Lake. Enjoy this bustling Indian community, where weavers work the colorful textiles before continuing on to Antigua for overnight

DAY 5, Tuesday - City Tour of Antigua
After breakfast, begin a full day city tour of Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded in 1543 by the Spaniards. Today, Antigua is a beautiful blend of ruins, restored colonial buildings, and modern colonial-style buildings. Visit the Central Plaza, in the heart of the city, surrounded by the Palace of the Captains General, colonial churches, monasteries, and a jade factory. Marvel at the amazing beauty and atmosphere of the city. Evening is at leisure to explore on your own

DAY 6, Wednesday - Copán Ruins
A very early morning departure for Copan, Honduras. After clearing immigration formalities, depart for a tour of the Copán Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that is considered to be one of the most impressive cities of the ancient Maya Civilization. Be amazed by the huge complex, which flourished from the 5th to 9th centuries AD, and consists of temples and plazas built on multiple levels. Explore the site before continuing to your hotel for dinner

DAY 7, Thursday - Visit Quiriguá
This morning, visit the Mayan site of Quirigua, located at the crossroads of several ancient trade routes. Originally built in the image of the Mayan area of Copán, Quirigua now lies in ruins, leaving a mere 21 monuments. Ponder the ancient mysteries of this small city before heading to the hotel for dinner.

DAY 8, Friday - Launch Excursion to San Felipe Castle
Early morning transfer to Rio Dulce. Board a launch bound for "Castillo de San Felipe" on Lake Izabal at the entrance to the Rio Dulce. Built in 1652, the San Felipe Castle was a Spanish colonial fort designed to prevent pirates from entering the lake from the Caribbean and keeping them from looting the villages. Later, continue on to the town of Livingston, at the mouth of the Rio Dulce (time and weather permitting). Once Guatemala's main port on the Caribbean Sea, it is still known today for its cultural mix. Afterward, continue to Tikal for overnight

DAY 9, Saturday - Excursion to Yaxha and Topoxte
Depart for Yaxha, a pre-Columbian city and ceremonial site for the Maya civilization. Spend the morning exploring the site, which contains over 500 structures, including the only twin-pyramid complex found outside of Tikal. Continue on to Topoxte, an outpost of Yaxha, located on a cluster of 5 islands in Yaxha Lake. Afterwards, return to your hotel in Tikal for a festive farewell dinner with your fellow travellers

DAY 10, Sunday - Sightseeing Tour of Tikal, Fly to Guatemala City
This morning travel to the ancient Mayan city of Tikal, one of the largest archaeological sites of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization, located at the center of the 222-square-mile park. An exhilarating jungle hike leads you through the ruins. Marvel at the impressive structures of this ancient civilization, as you visit sites such as the Twin-Pyramid complex, the Lost World Complex, where the Great Pyramid is located, Temple III, the Palace of the Windows, the Great Plaza, the Pyramid of the Grand Jaguar, the Pyramid of the Masks, and the Palace of the Nobles. Opportunity to climb to the top of Pyramid IV, the highest of the Mayan pyramids, from which you will have a panoramic view of Tikal and its surrounding jungle. After your tour of the ruins of what was once considered the most powerful kingdom of the ancient Maya, enjoy lunch. Afterward, head to Flores for your flight to Guatemala City

DAY 11, Monday - Depart Guatemala
