Is This Trip Right for You?

This active program covers a good amount of ground each day. Expect up to four hours walking on some touring days. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. Transferring between cities can be up to seven hours depending on weather and traffic conditions.

Itinerary

The Guatemala itinerary is performed by a local tour company. It is not an exclusive tour and therefore you may be with passengers from other tour companies; signage may display the local tour company name, but will have your name; tour guides and vehicles may change throughout your tour, and your tour documents/vouchers may be requested to exchange for local bus/theater/hotel/flight/ferry tickets. Luggage tags or name badges are not provided.

DAY 1, Friday - Depart for Guatemala
Depart for Guatemala. Upon arrival in Guatemala City, transfer to your hotel. Balance of the day is at leisure

DAY 2, Saturday - Tour of Antigua Guatemala
This morning, meet with your Tour Manager for an orientation before departing for an exciting tour of Antigua Guatemala, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 1543 by the Spaniards, today Antigua is a beautiful blend of ruins, restored colonial buildings, and modern colonial-style buildings. Visit the heart of the city, Central Plaza, surrounded by the Palace of the Captains General, colonial churches, monasteries, and a jade factory. Take in the amazing beauty and atmosphere of the city before transferring to Chichicastenango in the afternoon. Balance of the day is at leisure

DAY 3, Sunday - Market in Chichicastenango, Church of Santo Tomas, and Lake Atitlan
Depart this morning to visit the most picturesque and colorful Indian Market in the country, located in Chichicastenango. Hundreds of vendors from the surrounding countryside gather here to sell handicrafts, textiles, candles, food, flowers, and pottery. Spend time browsing the market for unique items that cannot be found elsewhere. Next, head to the 400-hundred year old Church of Santo Tomas, built on a pre-Columbian temple platform, and witness the captivating religious ceremonies that take place right on the steps. Later, continue on to Lake Atitlan, arguably one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Formerly a volcano, water now covers the caldera to create the deepest lake in Central America. The banks of Lake Atitlan are home to many villages in which Mayan culture is still practiced. After the excursion, transfer back to Guatemala City. Balance of the day is at leisure for individual pursuits

DAY 4, Monday - Full Day in Guatemala City
Today enjoy a full day at leisure in Guatemala City. Spend the day in "The Land of Eternal Spring" by exploring the many sights of Guatemala's capital city. Guatemala City is the largest city in Central America. View the city's museums or take time to explore Kaminaljuyu, an ancient Mayan City around which Guatemala City was built. Perhaps, join the optional full day Tikal, to visit one of the greatest Mayan ruins in Central America or, choose to attend the optional half day Guatemela City tour.

DAY 5, Tuesday - Depart for Costa Rica
Depart for Costa Rica. Arrive in San Jose and transfer to your hotel. Balance of the day at is leisure. This evening, enjoy a Welcome Drink and orientation with your new Tour Manager

DAY 6, Wednesday - Travel to Arenal
Today, take a brief panoramic tour of San Jose, with sights of the city including historic & government buildings and La Sabana, the public park. Next, depart for Arenal, enjoying the views of coffee and sugarcane plantations along the way. En route stop in Sarchi, an artisan town, where traditional colorful oxcarts and souvenirs can be found. If time permits there may be a visit to a local school on the way to Arenal. Later this evening after checking into your hotel, join the group for dinner at a local restaurant in Arenal

DAY 7, Thursday - Full Day in Arenal
Enjoy a full day at leisure in Arenal, famous for the Arenal Volcano. As Costa Rica's youngest volcano, it gained international notoriety in 1968 for its sudden eruption. Perhaps spend the day on the optional full day Cano Negro Boat Tour to learn more about the flora and fauna that inhabit the area

DAY 8, Friday - Travel to Monteverde
In the morning, embark on a brisk 2 mile walking tour of the Las Coladas trail in Arenal National Park to learn more about the flora and fauna while enjoying scenic views of the volcano. At the end of the trail, you may choose to participate in a rugged hike over the ancient lava rocks before continuing to Monteverde. Stop for lunch on your own en route to Monteverde; time permitting a guided walking tour acquaints you with the lovely surroundings

DAY 9, Saturday - Monteverde
Enjoy this morning at leisure, or choose to participate in one of the optional tours including the Selvatura Canopy and Hanging Bridges adventures. This stunning Cloud Forest boasts an extraordinarily diverse ecosystem, being home to 120 species of reptiles and amphibians, 130 species of mammals, and an astounding 500 species of birds, not to mention more than 3,000 species of plants. This afternoon enjoy lunch and a tour of a traditional Costa Rican coffee farm. Learn about how one of Costa Rica's top exports is grown in this tropical region and its importance in the socioeconomic development of the country. Tonight, dine at a local Monteverde restaurant

Perhaps explore the city independently and try one of over 50 restaurants, bars, night clubs, art galleries and museums or consider stopping at some of the various local stores to pick up souvenirs

Optional Tours

Join an optional tour to Tikal National Park, in the heart of the jungle of northern Guatemala to visit one the greatest Mayan ruins in Central America, You will be picked up early this morning for your flight to Flores, Peten. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the ancient Mayan City of Tikal, located at the center of the 222-square-mile park. An exhilarating jungle hike leads you through the ruins. Marvel at the impressive structures of this ancient civilization, visiting sites such as the Twin-Pyramid complex, the Lost World Complex, where the Great Pyramid is located, Temple III, the Palace of the Windows, the Great Plaza, the Pyramid of the Grand Jaguar, the Pyramid of the Masks, and the Palace of the Nobles. Have the opportunity to climb to the top of Pyramid IV, the highest of the Mayan pyramids, from which you will have a complete view of Tikal and its surrounding jungle. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport for your flight back to Guatemala City.

This morning join a panoramic tour of Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala and the largest city in Central America. The tour begins with the city's civic center complex, home to the Guatemala Supreme Court, Ministry of Public Finance, and City Hall. Continue on to Central Plaza, also known as Constitution Plaza, at the heart of Guatemala City. Here, view the National Palace, one of the most important Guatemalan architectural achievements of the last century. Formerly the seat of the government, it is now a museum and venue for government affairs. From here, you will continue on to the Cathedral, built between 1782 and 1815. The cathedral houses some of the most important artistic treasures in the country. The tour also takes you through the residential and the business districts of the city to gain a full understanding of life in Guatemala City.

Enjoy the peaceful sights and the sounds of the rain forest as you quietly float down the Rio Frio near the Nicaraguan border. A professional guide will share educational and interesting facts about the plants and animals encountered on the float. This area is abundant with bird species, including the Snake-Bird, Wood Storks, and Olivaceous Cormorants,. Keep an eye out for the various monkey species, sloths, turtles, and caimans that live along the rivers banks. This tour also includes a typical Costa Rican lunch, along with regional fruit, juices, and coffee. Pick-up and drop-off at the hotel.

Join this exciting tour to see the rainforest in a whole new way. Cross through the unique Cloud Forest's canopy while suspended from a high weight capacity zipline cable, maneuvering between the 15 platforms and 12 cables that span over 2 miles in length, making this extreme adventure one of the longest Zipline tours in the country.

It is recommended that you wear hiking boots for this activity as you will be walking some distance through the forest between the Zipline cables. For some, this activity may be considered very strenuous and people with difficulty breathing, heart or other medical conditions, should consider not to choose this optional tour.

The Selvatura Hanging Bridges are the longest and the strongest bridge system in the country. The hanging bridges give you the unique opportunity to see plants and animals not visible from the ground.
