Is This Trip Right for You?

This moderately active, adventurous program is intended to offer an introduction to Iceland and give you the opportunity to search for and perhaps view the Northern Lights. Different from any other program, because of the extreme climate and unpredictable weather conditions, you should be prepared for itinerary and flight schedule changes. The included Northern Lights tours often extend late into the evening and exact schedules depend on local weather conditions. Sightings cannot be guaranteed. You can expect to walk over rough, uneven terrain in dark conditions, and therefore proper winter clothing and footwear as well as a flashlight are essential for your safety and comfort. A guided orientation tour of Reykjavik is included. Affordable optional sightseeing excursions are available to enhance your holiday.

This is an active itinerary which includes several walking tours on often uneven, icy terrain.

DAY 1 - Depart for Iceland
Depart for Iceland

DAY 2 - Arrive in Reykjavik, Orientation Tour, Flight to Akureyri, Northern Lights Tour*
Arrive in Iceland, "Land of the Midnight Sun." Upon arrival at the airport, you will be met by your tour guide and fellow travelers. Then depart as a group to enjoy breakfast, followed by an orientation city tour of Reykjavík. During the tour, view the old town center, the Parliament, the harbor, the Hofdi house, and the Hallgrímskirkja Church, whose steeple is a Reykjavík landmark. Following the city tour, take a short flight to the city of Akureyri in Northern Iceland. Upon arrival, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. Time to settle in and relax before a Welcome Reception. Then search the skies for the Northern Lights, (Aurora Borealis) among the most spectacular phenomena on earth. Akureyri's proximity to the Arctic Circle means it is particularly well-positioned for viewing the Northern Lights, which originate from the sun, where large explosions and electronic storms throw charged solar particles deep into space. This solar wind is caught by the Earth's magnetic field on the south and north poles. The solar particles collide with atmospheric gases and create this wonderful light effect. This evening, hope to see these lights swirling and dancing across the sky, endlessly changing color, shape and size*
Overnight: Akureyri
Meals: Breakfast
