New Rome Bus Regulation for 2019 - It was recently announced that the city of Rome will be implementing new regulations for tourist bus access to the historical city center, including the areas near the Colosseum, Forum and Vatican City. These regulations are expected to take effect on Jan 1 2019. At this time, we are uncertain of the impact these regulations will have on our itineraries, but we are closely monitoring the situation and still planning to operate as usual. Due to the uncertainty of these new regulations, the means of transportation and order of your scheduled itinerary may be subject to change.

Is This Trip Right for You?

This program is active. Walking is done over cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs, steps, and significant slopes. Expect most of the sightseeing to require three to four hours of walking as well as a considerable time standing. Many historical cities have specific driving regulations, with set drop off and pick up points, that result in extra walking to and from the sights. The pacing is active as many sites are included. Welcome to Puglia, a spectacular expanse of land that juts out into the turquoise Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Arrive in the energetic port city of Bari and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to get acquainted with this fascinating city on your own. Tonight, attend an orientation meeting with your Tour Manager on the wonderful journey that awaits you, followed by a Drink and Welcome Dinner with your fellow travelers

DAY 3, Friday - Bari's Old City
The exploration of Bari starts in the revitalized narrow streets of the Old City (Bari Vecchia). View Bari Cathedral and the stunning Romanesque Basilica of San Nicola, housing the relics of St. Nicholas, known as Father Christmas. Next, your historical walking tour reveals 12th century Castello Normanno-Svevo built by the Normans. Perhaps stroll the harbor's bustling open-air fish market where locals buy their fish right out of the sea. Eating raw fish here is a regional tradition! Linger on your own, explore Bari's pretty squares, admire the architecture, or just sip an espresso at an outdoor café and "people-watch". Perhaps participate in the optional tasting of the area's famous Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Tonight, dinner is on your own, explore one of the piazzas buzzing with trendy restaurants and cafes and try traditional Pugliese food

DAY 4, Saturday - Castel del Monte, Seaside Trani
Today, travel to gorgeous Castel del Monte, an extraordinary medieval fortress celebrated for its unique octagonal design. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 13th-century castle, built by Frederick II, is considered one of the best preserved medieval castles in Southern Italy, used as a site of the famous movie "The Name of the Rose" with Sean Connery. A tour of this fortress highlights the ingenious architecture, magnificent structure, and its massive public halls. On to the historic seaside town of Trani on the Adriatic coast with its picturesque harbor and 12th-century Cathedral di San Nicola Pellegrino, spectacularly positioned at the water's edge. Time to walk through the charming and quaint town. Return to Bari for an evening at leisure

DAY 5, Sunday - Masseria Lunch, Lecce
Begin your day with a visit to a beautiful local farmhouse Masseria to enjoy lunch with regional specialties including local wine. Afterward, in Lecce, stroll along 300 year old cobblestone streets past exquisite Baroque architecture. You'll understand why Lecce is fondly named the "Florence of the South". After viewing Piazza del Duomo and the Roman amphitheater dating back to the 2nd century, admire the masterpiece of Southern Baroque in the Basilica of Santa Croce. Time to wander on your own and perhaps dine at one of the quaint trattorias in the city center

DAY 6, Monday - Full Day in Lecce
Today, spend the day at leisure to explore Lecce on your own or choose to participate in the optional tour through the Salento Peninsula. A picturesque drive will take you all the way to Santa Maria di Leuca, the end of the tip of the Italian heel, where the Adriatic Sea meets the Ionian Sea. Rocky coastline, beaches, fishing villages, and watchtowers are waiting to be experienced in the most remote area of the Puglia region. As you stop on the way to the beautiful coastline, indulge in the Mediterranean atmosphere of these beautiful shores and waters. Enjoy lunch with local products and dishes before continuing on the coast to reach Otranto, the easternmost Italian town. Walk the historical center surrounded by its ancient walls at your own pace, take your time to check the tiny small shops, and why not savor a gelato while sitting in an outdoor café before returning to Lecce for leisure time

DAY 7, Tuesday - Alberobello, Matera
Today, a visit to the delightful town of Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, introduces you to the Apulian traditional dry stone huts known as Trulli. In existence since the 14th century, these unusual structures featuring pyramidal, domed, or conical roofs are remarkable examples of mortarless, drywall construction, a prehistoric building technique used in this region. After time on your own, journey to fascinating Matera. Here, learn about Matera's roots connecting to the Paleolithic Age as you explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mysterious Sassi (ancient stone dwellings carved into rock) are believed to be the first human settlements in Italy. Over the centuries, the Sassi were adapted into family homes. Tonight, dinner is together at the hotel in Matera

DAY 8, Wednesday - Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii, Naples
A morning drive takes you to the remarkable archaeological site of Pompeii at the base of Mount Vesuvius, visit the city that was frozen in time under a thick carpet of volcanic ash almost 2,000 years ago. The tragic vestiges of people attempting to escape with their children and pets are still visible, along with the preserved ruins of the Temples of Apollo, Jupiter, and the Forum. Then on to the Gulf of Naples, where you are welcomed by panoramic views before reaching your hotel in the city of Naples

DAY 9, Thursday - The Gorgeous Amalfi Drive
A fantastic day as you drive along the rugged Amalfi coast, undoubtedly one of the most spectacular drives in the world, with its dramatic landscapes and amazing panoramas. Nestled into mountains which rise thousands of feet above the sea, you’ll see enchanting villages, cliffs terraced with lemon groves, whitewashed villas, and sparkling turquoise seas. Drive by Positano and stop in Amalfi, named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to enjoy time at leisure in town. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon

DAY 10, Friday - Full Day in Naples
A day at leisure in picturesque Naples, strikingly beautiful with its seaside setting. Don't miss the optional full day tour to the enchanting Isle of Capri by boat. Once there, walk through the narrow lanes of Anacapri, with its chic boutiques and shops offering tastings of the island's famous Limoncello. Then, to La Piazzetta where everyone gathers to socialize, and to the Gardens of Augustus, towards the top of the island, a natural paradise, from where you can see splendid views of the sea and the famous Faraglioni rock formations, one of the island's natural wonders. After a lovely day in Capri, return to Naples. Tonight enjoy dinner with your Tour Manager and fellow travelers

The historic tour of ancient Rome begins at the legendary Roman Forum, the central area of the city from which ancient Rome developed. Next, view the triumphal Arch of Constantine, erected by the Roman Senate to commemorate Constantine’s tenth year of leadership over the Eternal City. On to the mighty Colosseum, the largest amphitheater built in the Roman Empire that seated over 50,000, where gladiator contests and public events were attended by the rich, the poor and by the Emperor himself. Discover the delights of Rome this afternoon on your own. Stop at a local café for lunch and just people-watch, or savor a cappuccino, indulge in a delectable gelato or try an authentic Italian pizza

DAY 13, Monday - Vatican Museum and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel
Today visit the Vatican Museums and Michelangelo's masterpiece, the Sistine Chapel. Stroll through one of the most important art collections of the world. Admire the Gallery of Tapestries and the Geographical Maps before arriving to the Sistine Chapel, with its great frescoes by Michelangelo. Continue to St. Peter's Square, passing Bernini's famous colonnade to view St. Peter's Basilica,* built on the burial site of Saint Peter, with the most famous Michelangelo’s Pieta. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure or, join the optional walking tour of the Eternal City’s grand piazzas that begins at the Spanish Steps and continues to the legendary Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and the baroque Piazza Navona. DAY 14, Tuesday - Medieval Assisi City Tour en route to Florence
Depart Rome to the small medieval town of Assisi perched high on a hill in the Umbria region, with its Roman ruins, winding medieval streets and sacred shrines. Assisi is best known as the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi - patron saint of Italy. Its main attraction is the 13th-century Basilica di San Francesco, one of the artistic highlights of medieval Europe which contains the sacred relics of St. Francis and Giotto's astonishing frescoes. The town of Assisi has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its significant art and architecture. Afterwards, continue to the lively Renaissance city of Florence, with its priceless art and architecture for overnight

DAY 15, Wednesday - Tour of Florence
Today's tour of Florence begins with a visit to the Accademia of Fine Arts, where Michelangelo's David is housed; stand in awe of this glorious work of art. Walk to the Duomo, celebrated for its magnificent dome designed by Brunelleschi, and view the Baptistery's renowned "Gates of Paradise" by Ghiberti. Continue on a walk through the open-air museum at Signoria Square, ending at the splendid Ponte Vecchio. Florence is indeed the center of the world's finest art and architecture. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure in this spectacular Renaissance city, or participate in the optional guided tour of the Uffizi Gallery* that provides insight into the history of the structure and its collections. Depart Florence, traveling through the stunning golden landscape of Tuscany, dotted with olive and fig trees, to Pisa where we view the famous Piazza dei Miracoli with its Leaning Tower, one of the most instantly recognizable structures on earth. The monuments on the extraordinary Piazza dei Miracoli create a unique architectural blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Then, visit a traditional Tuscan farm in the countryside for wine tasting coupled with delectable local specialties before continuing to magical Venice for overnight

DAY 17, Friday - Boat Ride to Murano, Tour of Venice
The discovery of Venice begins with a boat ride to the Island of Murano, known for its artistic and colorful Murano glassware. While here enjoy a visit to one of the factories to witness the art of glass blowing. Afterwards, on to St. Mark's Square where you begin the guided walking tour of this romantic city. View the Golden Basilica of San Marco, built over several centuries in a fusion of Byzantine, Roman and Venetian architecture. Walk via the Bridge of Sighs, created at the beginning of the 17th century to serve as a link between the prisons. Continue, to the pink marble Doge's Palace, official residence of the Venetian ruler; its facade is highlighted by a massive late-Gothic gate, known as the Porta della Carta. The rest of the day is yours to explore Venice independently. Or participate in this afternoon's optional Gondola Ride with music - it's definitely one of the highlights of any Italian holiday!
