Is This Trip Right for You?

This moderately active trip covers a fair amount of ground each day. Expect from three to four hours walking every touring day. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. Welcome to Amsterdam, Holland’s sophisticated and modern capital. Transfer to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Most flights arrive in the early morning and your room may not be ready for you. In this case, leave your luggage with the concierge and your Tour Manager will provide suggestions for you to begin to explore the city on your own. Tonight, your tour begins at 5:30 PM when you join your Tour Manager for an orientation meeting that outlines the delightful tour that awaits you. We recommend that you select flights which arrive in Amsterdam no later than 3:30 PM on Day 2 of the itinerary, or earlier if possible. Afterwards, savor a Welcome Drink and Dinner with your fellow travelers

DAY 3, Saturday - Amsterdam Canal Tour and Volendam
This morning, board a glass-top boat for a delightful cruise of the winding canals for an up-close view of stately historic mansions, 16th-century gabled merchant houses, and charming churches with bell towers. This afternoon, enjoy a tour of traditional Holland that includes a visit to Volendam, a charming fishing village on the old Zuiderzee. Next, visit a cheese farm and see a historic windmill and clogmakers. Tonight, you may wish to participate in the optional dinner at a cozy Dutch restaurant followed by a walking tour with your guide to explore the notorious "Red Light" district. The classical architecture of Amsterdam truly comes alive at night

DAY 4, Sunday - Lowlands of Holland, Bremen's Old Town
Today will be a long but rewarding day of travel. Drive across the lowlands of Holland with its peaceful expanse of green fields to the edge of the former Zuiderzee before crossing the mighty Afsluitdijk dike that holds back the North Sea. Upon entering Germany, head to the colorful and charming Hanseatic town of Bremen on the Weser River. Enjoy an orientation tour of the Old Town, highlighted by the 600-year-old Town Hall with its splendid Weser Renaissance facade, recently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tonight, dinner is together at a local restaurant

DAY 5, Monday - Hamburg City Tour, Arrive in Berlin
Depart Bremen early this morning and continue to Hamburg, the largest port city on the Elbe River. A major center of international trade, Hamburg's dynamic port has brought great wealth to the city and World Heritage recognition by UNESCO. During your tour, view Alster Lake in the heart of the city, dotted with elegant waterside villas and the St. Pauli Piers near the colorful Fischmarkt. On to St. Michael's Church, Germany's finest baroque-style ecclesiastical building bearing the largest clock tower in Germany, and the impressive Town Hall built in the early 1800s. Then depart Hamburg and drive east, crossing the former "Iron Curtain" to Berlin, Germany's fabulous capital city, an international mecca for art, culture, and fashion. Arrive early this evening with time to settle in at your hotel before joining the optional excursion to a "Berlin Style" dinner party with traditional dishes, drinks and live music, followed by a scenic drive through the highlights of Berlin

DAY 6, Tuesday - Berlin's Famous Landmarks
History comes to life during your tour of Berlin today, viewing landmarks of the former East and West German sections including the triumphant Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of the reunification, the glass-domed Reichstag Building and Checkpoint Charlie, a symbol of the formerly divided city. Drive along lively Unter den Linden Boulevard past the grand State Opera House and the imposing Cathedral. See a remaining section of the wall and the Holocaust Memorial. After the tour you will have time at leisure to perhaps visit the district of Kurfürstendamm, the most elegant boulevard in Berlin for strolling, shopping and relaxing at a street side café, or you may wish to participate in an optional tour to nearby Potsdam, the historic "City of Palaces" where Truman, Stalin, and Churchill met to negotiate terms for the end of WWII. Evening is at leisure to enjoy Berlin's trendy restaurants and non-stop nightlife

DAY 7, Wednesday - Drive to Koblenz
This morning, depart Berlin and travel through the former East Germany passing Leipzig, and into the rolling hills of the Rhineland to the historic city of Koblenz. Situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, the city is dominated by the mighty Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. This evening, dinner together is at your hotel

DAY 8, Thursday - Rhine River Cruise, Village of Bacharach, Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and Cable Car Ride
Your day begins with a drive into the Rhine Valley where you will embark on a river cruise through the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cruise offers spectacular vistas of hilltop castles, terraced vineyards, and villages of timber-framed houses. Pass the mighty Lorelei rock that rises vertically from the waters named for the siren that bewitched passing sailors. Then enjoy a wine tasting followed by free time in the charming village of Bacharach to wander around, shop and have lunch on your own. Later, drive to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress perched on a rocky outcrop over the town of Koblenz. Take in marvelous views over the Rhine and Moselle Rivers before descending via Cable Car to Deutsches Eck to view the monument to Kaiser Wilhelm. Tonight, join the optional dinner in a typical wine tavern serving traditional fare

DAY 9, Friday - Moselle Valley, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
This morning, travel to the fairy-tale town of Cochem, in the most romantic part of the Moselle valley, dramatically dominated by medieval Reichsburg Castle. The town with its narrow streets and restored half-timber houses is indeed a step back in time. This afternoon cross into the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. At the entrance to the city, pause for a guided visit to the U.S. Military Cemetery from WWII where over 5,000 American soldiers and General Patton are laid to rest. Then take a short orientation tour of Luxembourg City before arriving at the hotel in time for dinner

DAY 10, Saturday - Bastogne War Museum, Tour Brussels
Crossing into Belgium, stop at Bastogne, scene of the infamous Battle of the Bulge waged by U.S. forces against retreating Germans. Visit the Bastogne War Museum which covers World War II from its origins to the Battle of the Bulge. Depart for Brussels where you will enjoy a tour with views of the Atomium and Palace of Justice. Visit the 17th-century Grand Place with its decorated guild houses, and stroll the city center to view the famous Mannekin Pis fountain. Your evening is free to explore the myriad of restaurants on the Rue des Bouchers

DAY 11, Sunday - Full Day in Brussels
A full day to explore Brussels on your own. Sample fine chocolates, shop for handmade lace or visit the Parc du Cinquantenaire, built during Léopold II's reign, best known for its cluster of art and history museums. Or, you may wish to participate in the full day optional tour to Bruges, home to some of Europe's best preserved medieval buildings. The tour takes you first to view the Lake of Love (Minnewater) and the Beguinage convent and continues for a walking tour of the city's medieval districts, where you will visit Our Lady's Church, home of the famous Madonna statue by Michelangelo. See the Market Square and Belfry, and the Town Hall Square with its Chapel of the Holy Blood. You'll have time to explore the abundance of handicraft shops and cafes before returning to Brussels. This morning, drive south over the French border to Paris, City of Light, arriving at lunchtime for a guided tour. On to the vivacious Left Bank, where artists, philosophers and writers once flourished in the artistic community at Montparnasse. View the imposing Cathedral of Notre Dame and the Latin Quarter, home to many of France's higher education establishments. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure to enjoy the endless delights of this romantic city.
