Welcome to Frankfurt, home of the European Central Bank and financial heart of Germany. The remainder of the day is at leisure to rest, or perhaps stroll through the medieval Romerplatz, Frankfurt's central square with its 14th century architecture. Tonight, meet your Tour Manager for a briefing on the delightful journey that lies ahead, followed by a Welcome Drink and Dinner with your fellow travelers

DAY 3, Saturday - Rhine River Cruise
The day begins with a leisurely cruise on the picturesque Rhine River past exquisite landscapes of hilltop castles, steep terraced vineyards and tiny villages of timber-framed houses. View the mighty Lorelei rock rising vertically from the waters named for the mermaid "Lorelei" who bewitched sailors passing by. Continue to Rudesheim for a wine tasting at a local restaurant before returning to Frankfurt in the late afternoon

DAY 4, Sunday - Heidelberg & Rothenburg Sightseeing
This morning depart for Heidelberg, home to the oldest university in Germany. View the imposing red sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle originally built in the 12th century. This hilltop Gothic masterpiece has encountered turbulent times but still stands as a dominant symbol of the city. Continue to Rothenburg this afternoon, a picturesque walled town in the Franconian heartland where time has stood still. Untouched by the ravages of wars, you’ll be enchanted by this fairytale gem with its medieval cobble streets, ramparts, and century's old mansions. Upon arrival, join a walking tour, stopping at the Town Hall square with its unusual clock that displays a mechanical drinking scene with moving figures. This evening, dine at your traditional accommodation with your traveling companions

DAY 5, Monday - City Tour of Munich
Travel to Munich, the pride of Bavaria with its fun loving spirit. At Marienplatz Square, cultural center of the city, join the crowds watching the famous glockenspiel clock dating back to 1908 with its colorful mechanical figures dancing at the top of the hour. Continue to the Olympic Stadium in the heart of Olympia Park, main venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics. Driving through the city, view the Nymphenburg Palace with its gorgeous baroque facade, once summer residence of Bavarian rulers and historic monuments including the Koenigsplatz. This evening, get acquainted with traditional Bavarian culture in the heart of Munich. Begin the evening with a stroll to the Hofbrauhaus, one of Munich's oldest and most famous beer halls. This institution was built in the 16th century, and continues to brew its beer according to the strict Bavarian Beer Purity Laws. Continue to a local restaurant to enjoy some hearty Bavarian fare and cheerful "gemutlichkeit!"

DAY 6, Tuesday - Full Day in Munich
Day at leisure to further explore Munich on your own, or participate in the optional morning tour to fairytale Linderhof Palace, built by "mad" King Ludwig II and Oberammergau, world-famous for the Passion Play, two of the highlights of Southern Bavaria in the high Alps

DAY 7, Wednesday - Salzburg City Tour
Drive to magical Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart. A guided walking tour takes you to the house where Mozart was born, as well as to the squares and gardens of this beautiful city, crowned by the 11th century Hohensalzburg Fortress. The city, also known as home of the singing Von Trapp family, was the setting for the Sound of Music film. Time to walk the lovely lanes filled with delightful shops and cafes. This afternoon, perhaps join the optional tour to Hitler's notorious "Eagles Nest"

DAY 8, Thursday - Full Day in Salzburg
Today is at leisure to explore Salzburg independently. Perhaps join the optional tour into Austria’s Lake District. Later enjoy a leisurely lake cruise, passing soaring mountains and fairytale villages made famous thanks to the iconic movie The Sound of Music

DAY 9, Friday - Vienna City Tour
This morning depart for Vienna, the former center of he Hapsburg Empire. Upon arrival, enjoy a sightseeing tour that begins with a visit to the impressive Schonbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Hapsburg emperors. Continue with a drive along the famous Ringstrasse and view the Empress Maria Theresia Monument, Votive Church, City Hall and Parliament. Next, walk through the Hofburg courtyards to the State Opera House. Tonight, perhaps take the opportunity to attend an evening of Viennese culture in the "City of Music" at an optional concert performance of the classical masterpieces of Mozart and Strauss, two of Vienna's most famous citizens

DAY 10, Saturday - Full Day in Vienna
A day at leisure to explore Vienna on your own. Perhaps join the half day optional tour that takes you across the border to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. For centuries, this city has been famous for its charm and beauty. It has undergone a major revitalization and now flourishes as one of Europe's newest capitals. The beautifully restored old town with its winding lanes and medieval courtyards is nestled between the steep Castle Hill and the Danube River. First, explore the historic center on a guided walking tour. After, take time to stroll the lively pedestrian streets of this charming city where local street vendors offer regional gifts before returning to Vienna. Tonight, bid farewell to your fellow travelers and Tour Manager at the farewell dinner in a traditional Austrian heurigen (tavern)

Optional Tours

Two of the highlights of southern Bavaria are visited during this excursion to the high Alps. First, admire the artistically decorated castle Linderhof built by "Mad" King Ludwig II along with a guided tour of the palace. Proceed via the Ettal Monastery to Oberammergau, world-famous for its Passion Play, the woodcarvers and the richly painted houses (Lüftl-paintings).
