Kathmandu is far more than an exotic and enticing destination; it is an experience. And we experience it to its fullest today. This morning, join your fellow travelers for a yoga class, an exercise that owes much to the Buddhist, Hindu, and Tantric traditions that have shaped Nepal. Then we get underway with a visit to magical Durbar Square, a dizzying assembly of more than a dozen historic buildings, including the sprawling Hanuman Dhoka Palace, the ancient home of Nepalese royalty, and Kasthamandap, made from the timber of a single tree. We also stop at the Temple of the Living Goddess, who is thought to serenely watch over visitors from the balcony of her temple residence. Next, stop at a market to browse local wares: coconut and marigolds for temple offerings, or tiger balm for the mountain trekker weary from Himalayan hikes. Our morning concludes at the hilltop Swayambhunath, said to be 2,000 years old and one of Nepal’s most sacred Buddhist stupas. The all-seeing eyes of Buddha stare out from its base from under its conical spire. After lunch, we visit a nearby school to meet some winsome Nepalese children and learn about the school system here. After time to explore on your own, enjoy dinner on your own. This evening, climb aboard a rickshaw for a thrilling ride through an illuminated Kathmandu
    Overnight: Hotel de l'Annapurna, Kathmandu

DAY 5, Friday - Hike Nagarkot/Meet Everest Trekker
This morning we visit the rural and scenic village of Nagarkot, taking time to explore this rural enclave and perhaps watching the Tamang people distill alcohol from rice or corn. We break at a trailside farm to share lunch with a local family. In Bhaktapur, known as the city of devotees, vestiges of medieval life appear around every corner. We stop to observe local artisans shaping pottery, and tour the Durbar Square and its Golden Gate and Palace of 55 Windows. Back at our hotel this evening, we receive a visit from a Nepalese trekker who has climbed Mt. Everest. We’ll learn about the deep meaning that this mountain holds for her and for her fellow Nepalese. Her stories of determination and courage are sure to inspire you
    Overnight: Hotel de l'Annapurna, Kathmandu
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Optional Tour: Mount Everest Flightseeing (AM)

DAY 6, Saturday - Visit Temples and Stupas/Cooking Lesson
Today we glimpse more of the spiritual diversity that defines Nepal. Begin at Pashupatinath Temple, one of the Hindu world’s most sacred temples. The annual Shivaratri pilgrimage draws thousands of devotees from across the globe to pray to the Lord Shiva here. Next, visit the largest stupa in the world, the pastel-colored Boudhanath Stupa. Multi-hued prayer flags drape from its spire over a white dome. We meet the resident lamas here and pause to visit their school. Later, they can assist us in hanging our own prayer flags and lighting a traditional butter lamp. For lunch, learn to make beef and vegetable Momos during a special cooking class. These delicate dumplings, filled with vegetables or meat, are a national dish of Nepal and Tibet – and you’ll soon see why! The rest of today is free for you to explore Kathmandu
    Overnight: Hotel de l'Annapurna, Kathmandu
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 7, Sunday - Fly to Chitwan National Park/Visit Tharu Village
Continue your Nepal adventure with a short flight to Chitwan over the breathtaking Himalayas. Chitwan National Park is the best preserved conservation area in all of Asia, and home to the elusive Bengal tiger. Our lodgings amidst these subtropical lowlands are perched on a bluff overlooking the Rapti River and the expansive park. After lunch in this magnificent setting, we visit an authentic Tharu village. Time seems to have stood still here, amidst tranquil farmland and simple villages. We’ll stop at an elephant stable and learn from resident naturalists the role that these gentle giants play. Later return to our lodge for free time to relax and take in this magnificent setting
    Overnight: Safari Narayani, Chitwan
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 8, Monday - Elephant Safari/Cruise in Mokoro Canoe/Walking Safari
Early this morning, we set out on a thrilling safari - on the backs of elephants! Our wildlife sightings are frequent in the quiet of morning, when the animals are most active. After breakfast, we learn more about Chitwan and its conservation efforts during a discussion at our lodge. Later, glide along the Rapti River in a traditional dug-out canoe. More than 450 birds thrive in the park, and we’ll see many aquatic species during our pleasant idyll. Our destination is a crocodile breeding center, where we learn about this endangered reptile. Then we explore by foot – a rare privilege – with an expert, trained naturalist, adept at spotting wildlife. Tonight, tap your feet to regional rhythms as local performers regale us with traditional dance
    Overnight: Safari Narayani, Chitwan
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9, Tuesday - Transfer to Bandipur/Tour Village
We drive to Bandipur today. Centuries ago, this sleepy village prospered when merchants took advantage of its malaria-free location and transformed it into a stopover on the India-Tibet trade route. Evidence of the many cultures that passed through remains today. We admire the town’s Newari architecture during our walking tour, with excellent views of the Himalayas along the way. After lunch at a restaurant here, we visit Gorkha Palace. This splendid edifice was home to King Prithivi Narayan Shah, who unified Nepal
    Overnight: Gaun Ghar Hotel, Bandipur
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 10, Wednesday - Transfer to Pokhara/Cruise Phewa Lake
After breakfast, we travel to the tranquil valley city of Pokhara. Along the way, we stop to admire the dreamy terraces of rice paddies and mustard fields. After settling in to our Pokhara hotel and having lunch here, we explore some of the area’s natural wonders, including the cascading Devil’s Falls, known locally as Patale Chhango, which drop out of sight into an underground gorge. We end our afternoon with a scenic boat ride on Phewa Lake, Nepal’s second largest fed by pristine Himalayan waters
    Overnight: Shangri-La Village, Pokhara
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 11, Thursday - Tour Pokhara/Enjoy Home Hosted Dinner
Begin today at Pokhara’s World Peace Pagoda, created by a Japanese monk who was stirred by the teachings of Gandhi to promote non-violence. We wrap up our morning with a short hike and serene boat ride. After lunch at a local lodge, we stop at the International Mountaineering Museum, where exhibits shed light on equipment and materials of the sport, and examine alpine cultures, flora, fauna, and geology. It’s a fitting collection, surrounded as we are by the stunning Annapurna range. Tonight, we’re the guests of a local Pokhara family. There’ll be lots of opportunity to share delicious, home-cooked food and stories from your trip
    Overnight: Shangri-La Village, Pokhara
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 12, Friday - Fly to Kathmandu/Explore Patan
We fly back to Kathmandu, then take an excursion to Patan, known as the “City of Artisans." Some stupas here are thought to date back to the third century, but charming Patan is best know for its arts; among brick houses and well-preserved temples, the finest Nepalese craftsmen and metallurgists keep ancient techniques alive. We visit the Golden Temple, Kumbeswor, and pause for lunch at the Patan Museum, where a project leader fills us in on the city’s restoration. Enjoy lunch in the midst of this important cultural institution. Stop at a handicrafts shop to glimpse art firsthand. Tonight, we share our special farewell dinner at our hotel
