Full Day Pompeii Tour: $183 per person
Leave Rome along the Autostrada del Sole southwards. Halfway to Naples, the Abbey of Montecassino, completely rebuilt after the total destruction in the Second World War, can be seen high up on the hill to our left. Then on into the fertile countryside surrounding Naples. After a short panoramic sightseeing, on the way to Pompeii stop for a visit to an ancient cameos and coral factory in Torre del Greco. Then on to Pompeii for lunch at a restaurant and visit of the excavations.

Nineteen centuries ago during the summer of 79 AD, Vesuvius suddenly re-erupted, completely destroying Pompeii and Herculaneum. Its ashes, gases and hot clouds claimed numerous lives but at the same time preserved the existing environment and a way of life typical of the ancient Roman society at its height. The layer of ashes preserved intact people and everyday items, food and domestic animals; all remained steady and hidden until the first half of the 18th century when regular digs were organized.

At the end of the visit proceed to Rome where passengers are dropped off at several points in the city center, around 8:30 pm. [Daily, tour includes lunch. No tour Dec 25, Jan 1, or March 16.]
Ancient Ostia: $84 per person
Something really special to crown your Roman holidays. Not everybody realizes that only 30 minutes from the Capital, an extraordinary archeological site, as important and exciting as Pompeii, awaits us: the impressive excavations of Ancient Ostia. This was the city-harbor founded by ancient Romans at the mouth of the Tiber, and which later was hidden by floods and oblivion up to our days. Its remnants are thus better preserved than in Rome itself and offer us an extraordinary testimonial of the Roman civilization along its entire evolution. By walking through the ancient roads we will plunge straight into the past everyday life of a refined and dynamic city where the cult for arts and pleasures was sovereign. You will admire in fact the ruins of majestic public buildings, like temples, theatres, fora, or basilicas, as well as of the private ones, like houses, shops, inns, workshops, etc., ranging from the sumptuous to the humblest. Particularly attractive are the famous mosaics of the 12 thermal baths and of the various harbor offices ( Corporations Square). A further bonus: archeology spared the whole area from modern artifacts, turning it into a delicious natural oasis, constantly cooled by healthy sea breezes. [Runs April 1 to October 31 only. Tues. and Fri. only - departs Vastours terminal at 8:30am. Pick-up at hotels between 7:45am and 8:15am]
